Responsibly Raising Animals
In 2016, we announced a groundbreaking change in the way we think about raising chickens. This included goals to increase bird activity through natural lighting and enrichments, research with slower-growing breeds, a commitment to move from electrical to gas stunning and strengthening relationships with our farmers.
Our 2017 Highlights Report outlines some of the progress we've made and our key next steps as we continue the journey of continuous improvement and commitment to transparency in chicken care.
Our Perdue Commitments to Animal Care is a four-part program to accelerate our progress in animal care, strengthen our relationships with our farmers, build trust with multiple stakeholder groups and create an animal care culture for continuous improvement.
Our chickens have more space
We increased the number of chicken houses with natural light and implemented minimum six-hour "lights-off" resting periods for all our chickens
Improvements in health and welfare helped us move all our chickens to No Antibiotics Ever protocols
We increased communication with our farmers and adjusted pay to cover fewer chickens in the house and longer periods between flocks
